S2 into S3
Course Personalisation

BGEThe Broad General Education phase of your child’s education extends from Primary to the end of S3. Within this time it is our aim that your child receives a rounded education before they enter the Senior Phase in S4 and continue their journey towards National and Higher exams through SQA.

There are enhancements to the shape and structure of our curriculum, including a continued focus on Literacy and Numeracy, as well as increased emphasis on Science and Technologies and in creative areas such as Music and Art in S1 and S2, which creates an appropriate balance and breadth for all pupils.

In March 2019, your child will be asked to select eight subjects to study in S3. The choices are offered in such a way as to continue the principles of the Broad General Education: developing knowledge and skills spanning as broad a palette as possible. Then, towards the end of S3, pupils will be required to further personalise their curriculum and reduce their study to seven subjects for study towards SQA exams in 2021. Most learners will emerge from S4, as before, with seven SQA qualifications. It is important to note that our young people will be engaged in study towards National 3-5 qualifications from S3 to the end of S4.

The current course choice menu is based on pupil preference from previous open choice consultations as well as staffing availability and discussions with Principal Teachers. Please take account of information shared in your child’s January report and from discussion at the S2 parents’ evening to assist when making choices for S3.

Curriculum areas are already detailed in the course choice booklet information online and if you require further information then please contact your child's Principal Teacher of Guidance in the first instance.
